Former President at TikTok, launches a dating app Spark: Know what is it about
Former President at Musical.ly (Now known as TikTok), Alex Hofmann who once helped build an app that competes with western giants like Meta and Snapchat, came out winning.
Hofmann later created 9count, the parent company to apps like Everland, Helpline, Juju and Wink.
Founded in 2018, 9count has raised $21.5 million in funding led by Redpoint and GGV Capital. Its newest app Spark is available now on iOS
He understands that having a single app is not enough to scale and generate profits in the long run. So, app companies focus on creating multiple apps all part of an ecosystem.
While Chinese companies develop those apps, Facebook has done that by acquiring other apps like WhatsApp and Instagram.
After Hofmann saw people wanting to connect with the friends they meet on Wink, he found it fitting to launch a dating app.
Spark dating app does not have the feature of swiping left or right. Instead, it shows a grid with potential connections on the map. It is focused on connecting users to other Spark users around the same geographic area.
You can only receive and send messages to people who have “liked” you back. Until the selection is made from both sides, a conversation cannot be started.
Similar to Bumble, in spark dating app, your request to connect with the person lasts only for 24 hours. This feature was added to minimize the waiting game that happens in dating apps usually.
You get a yes or a no quickly.
Spark dating app is free to download and use but an additional subscription model has been introduced that offers extra features and premium tools to the users.
Will Spark prove to be serious competition to dating apps like Tinder, Bumble and Spark?
